The brave display by St. Brigid’s in the recent All-Ireland SFC club final against Dingle, which ended in a one-point defeat for the Roscommon team, was roundly praised by councillors at a recent meeting of Athlone Municipal District.
“As a St. Brigid’s person for a lifetime, I have to admire them and while we didn’t win the trophy on Sunday last, I think that they represented the county with a first class display with probably the best game of football played in Croke Park for the past thirty or forty years,” said Cllr. Tony Ward. “Small things count and I’ve huge confidence in the chair of the club, the manager and the coach and I know that that team will be back in the future. I want to thank them for the huge effort and exhibition they put in of football and gamesmanship.” MD Cathaoirleach, Cllr. Domnick Connolly said it was a disappointment, but he was glad to see it not going to penalties. “It was a display of Gaelic football at its best and they were two brilliant teams, and they have a great team, management and supporters,” said Cllr. Connolly.
Cllr. Laurence Fallon described it as an “exceptional game”. “I never seen a game that got so much coverage in the media after the event and the Fallon kick was the kick of the century!” he said. “Listening to the players on social media, they were well able to communicate and brought respect to the game. They will be back. It is a huge disappointment for them but they can be exceptionally proud and have gone down as by far, the best team that lost in the past twenty years.”
Cllr. Valerie Duffy said she was at the match and sent a mixture of congrats and sympathy to the team.
“We were all on the pitch when Fallon took that shot to get it into extra time - commiserations to the entire team, and management,” said Cllr. Duffy. “It was very emotional. I wish them well and they represented the county very well and in the run up to the game.”
