Two brothers from Cloonfad in West Roscommon who took part in the New York Marathon at the weekend dedicated their run to families of all recently deceased in Cloonfad.

The Fagan brothers, Gerard and Shane, recorded two super performances in the marathon. In what was a very emotional event for the brothers, they dedicated their achievement to the families of all recently deceased in Cloonfad.

On Saturday, September 28th last Gerard and Shane’s brother Harry (19) and friend James Daniels (13) died in a road tragedy in Cloonfad.

Gerard, Shane and their brother Daniel paid tribute to their sibling, Harry, in a joint eulogy at his funeral. They said that there were no words “that can ease the pain we feel in losing him. He was a bright, fierce and an unstoppable wild force. His life ended far too soon. In the time he had he filled every corner of it with love and laughter and with the kind of wild energy that could never be continued.”

They also remembered the Daniels family and their loss. “James wasn't just a friend, he was family to us. We loved him like he was one of our own.”

Gerard and Shane have been living in the United States for the past couple of years and had been an integral part of the  local Cloonfad United team before their departure.

While training for the marathon event, they were dealt a blow with the untimely passing of their brother Harry and his friend James Daniels in the road traffic accident.

Cloonfad United has congratulated both Gerard and Shane, who despite the setbacks, produced superb performances on a very difficult New York course.
