Council hires company to carry out drone surveys across the county

Roscommon County Council has appointed a Mullingar company to carry out drone surveys at Active Travel project locations throughout County Roscommon over the next twelve months.
Acting on behalf of the council, the Data Controller for this project, SKYFAB will undertake aerial photography and video surveys to document Active Travel schemes before and after construction works are completed.
Over the course of the year from from July 16th 2026 to July 15th 2027. drone operators will visit locations across the county, including: Ardsallagh Woods and Castle Lane in Roscommon Town, the Pedestrian and Cycle Bridge site at Ardnanagh, Bealnamullia, Cloonakille and Monksland near Athlone, Curraghboy, Ballyforan, and Carrick-on-Shannon Train Station. Surveys will also take place along the Old Galway Road (Springwell Road) in Monksland and Bellaugh.
The programme includes a number of Safe Routes to Schools projects at schools and communities across Roscommon. Survey locations include St Paul’s National School, Castlerea; SN Cruachain, Croghan; St Michael’s and St Patrick’s National Schools, Cootehall; Scoil na nAingeal Naofa on Carrick Road, Boyle; St Attracta’s National School and Brusna Nati onal School near Ballaghaderreen; Cornafulla National School, Camcloon National School and St Ciaran’s National School at Rooty Cross, Athlone; St Patrick’s National School, Alderford, Ballyfarnon; Gaelscoil de hÍde in Ros Comáin; Roxboro National School; St Patrick’s National School, Frenchpark; and St Michael’s Special School, Castlerea.
Each survey is expected to be completed within a single day, and on-site notices will be displayed for the duration of the works.
The purpose of the surveys is to capture high-quality aerial imagery and video footage for inclusion in reports submitted by Roscommon County Council to the National Transport Authority (NTA), the approving authority for the National Active Travel Investment Programme. Approved photographs and videos may also be used by Roscommon County Council and the NTA to showcase and promote Active Travel schemes through their websites, publications and social media channels.
SKYFAB is fully licensed and registered with the Irish Aviation Authority (IAA) to carry out operations of this nature. All surveys will be conducted by trained and competent pilots holding the appropriate Irish Aviation Authority (IAA) licences and operating in accordance with IAA regulations and data protection legislation.
