Cloonfad suffers fourth water main burst in a week
The people of Cloonfad have suffered about 50 bursts over the last three years.
Cloonfad has suffered yet another burst on its mains – its fourth in a week.
Despite repairs being carried out by Uisce Éireann crews over this time, the local community has been hit with another outage.
The bursts have been impacting supplies to customers in Cloonfad, Granlahan South, and surrounding areas.
To support affected customers, alternative water supplies are in place at St. Patrick’s Church, Cloonfad, and Cloonfad soccer pitch, Lavallyroe.
Cllr Fitzmaurice has described the situation as “intolerable” for the people of Cloonfad who have suffered about 50 bursts over the last years. He has repeated his calls on Uisce Éireann to start work immediately on a planned upgrade of the main.
“I’ve spoken to Minister Dara Calleary and Dr Martin Daly about this. We now need a start date for the works to replace this main and if they are not willing to give a start date, we’ll have to take further action.
“Whether that be a protest at their office in Castlebar or that we call on our TDS to bring Uisce Éireann before of the Oireachtas committees in Dail Eireann. Something has to happen at this stage because people have suffered terribly,” he said.
A spokesperson for Uisce Éireann said the company apologised for the disruptions experienced by customers in the Cloonfad area, most recently this morning, Monday, where a crew is on site and addressing the unplanned outage.
"We fully appreciate how frustrating repeated outages have been for households and businesses. We want to assure the community that we are actively progressing the planned replacement of the aged water main in the village, and this project is now at detailed design stage.
"Our teams will continue to work hard to minimise further disruption as we progress this essential upgrade. We will continue to keep local stakeholders updated as the project progresses," said the spokesperson.
