An Elphin man who wielded a hatchet and later urinated on the floor of a cell at Castlerea Garda Station has been ordered to carry out 200 hours of community services in lieu of two months in prison after being found suitable by the probation services.
Cormac Cosgrove (28) with an address at 15 Windmill Park, Elphin was before Strokestown District Court for having a hatchet/axe intending to use it unlawfully to cause injury following an altercation on July 14th last at Windmill Park.
He was further charged with damaging a flatscreen tv to the value of €250 on February 27th, 2025, at 15 Windmill Park and on the same date intentionally urinating all over the floor of a cell at Castlerea Gada Station, and also all over the floor of the public toilet.
He was further charged with putting the contents of a bottle of hand sanitiser gel into the tray at the hatch in the station and using threatening and abusive language on the same date.
Pleas in the matter had been entered at a previous sitting of Strokestown district court.
Judge James Faughnan heard the defendant has been found suitable following assessment and ordered he carry out 200 hours community service.
