Visible policing demanded on the streets of County Roscommon town after alleged brawl

A video of an alleged brawl on Ballaghaderreen's Main Street has been posted on social media.

An alleged brawl on Ballaghaderreen’s Main Street this morning, Saturday has prompted renewed calls from local councillor Micheál Frain for a regular, visible Garda presence in the town.

The councillor shared a video on social media showing a dispute disrupting traffic on the street earlier this morning.

Gardaí told the Roscommon Herald they had not received any reports of the incident.

Describing the incident as “appalling”, Cllr Frain has called on Garda Commissioner Justin Kelly and senior Garda management to ensure the town has a “proper, effective policing service”.

“How much longer must the people of Ballaghaderreen put up with this?” asked Cllr Frain.

“When will Garda management finally listen to my repeated calls for a proper, visible and effective policing service in our town,” he asked.

Cllr Frain said he had repeatedly highlighted what he described as the lack of an adequate policing service in Ballaghaderreen since his election to Roscommon County Council, but said his concerns continued to fall on deaf ears.

“Will it take another serious injury, or worse, before Garda management finally listens and takes action?” he asked.

“I am now formally calling on Garda Commissioner Kelly, Assistant Commissioner Richardson and Chief Superintendent McMahon to address this appalling behaviour and ensure that Ballaghaderreen is provided with a regular Garda presence and a proper, effective policing service.

“The people of Ballaghaderreen deserve to feel safe on their own streets. This is not an unreasonable demand. It is a basic expectation.

“Enough is enough. We need action, not more excuses,” he said.
