Connolly elected as county's first citizen

Improving road safety in the county’s towns, villages, residential areas and schools will be among the priorities for Roscommon County Council’s new Cathaoirleach.
Cllr Domnick Connolly became the county’s first citizen after he was elected unopposed by his colleagues this afternoon.
The Fuerty man, who was proposed and seconded by his Fine Gael colleagues Valerie Duffy and Ruth Conboy, was re-elected to the local authority in 2024 as a FG councillor. His Athlone Municipal District colleague, Cllr Laurence Fallon was elected as Leas Cathaoirleach, who was proposed by Cllr John Keogh and seconded by Cllr Emer Kelly.
“It is a great honour and I am deeply humbled to be elected as Cathaoirleach of Roscommon County Council,” Cllr Connolly said.
Cllr Connolly also thanked his family “who are the rock in my life”, his wife Mary, children John, Niall and Sarah and his seven wonderful grandchildren.
During the meeting , his political resilence and ability to work with others were praised.
