Council issues statement on procedures to fill Anthony Waldron’s council seat

A special council meeting of the council will be held on Monday to decide who will replace the late Independent councillor from Ballintubber.

Roscommon County Council has issued a statement explaining the procedures around the filling of the vacant council seat following the untimely death of Independent councillor Anthony Waldron in February.

In the statement, the council said that the upcoming co-option to Roscommon County Council to fill the seat will be undertaken in line with legislation.

“There is no legislative provision for a by-election in the case of a vacancy during the council term.

“Public expressions of interest were sought via local and social media for the filling of the vacancy. Four expressions of interest were received.

"In accordance with Section 19 of the Local Government Act 2001 (as amended) and the council’s standing orders, this vacancy will be filled by a vote of the elected members of the Council,” said the statement.

A special meeting of the council will be held on Monday next at 12 pm.

The council said that during this meeting, an open and public vote will take place, where all councillors present will be asked to clearly state who they are voting for, in line with standing orders.

The four who submitted nominations are Gail Murray and Michael Holland snr, both Ballintubber residents; Monksland’s Ernie Draper and Mairead Kenny from Donamon.
