Councillor warns of planning objections

A councillor said the state was now only “waking up” to the devastation caused by objections.

Planning objections could ‘scuttle’ the City of Athlone project, a councillor has warned.

Cllr Tom Crosby claimed that objections from environmentalists hold up projects for years and years. He said that it is only now the state is “waking up” to the devastation caused by objections.

“In North Roscommon, a Canadian consortium was going to invest in a €200 million project, and because of a horseshoe bat and a couple of pine martens, they scuttled the whole lot,” he said.

He warned if this situation is not addressed “it will be virtually impossible” for a project like the City of Athlone to proceed.
