Council's Storm Éowyn expenditure finally recouped
Storm Éowyn caused extensive damage in Mote Park with hundreds of trees knocked.
The money spent by Roscommon County Council to pay for the clean up caused by Storm Éowyn last January has now been recouped.
In November of 2025, councillors were informed that the approximate €1.1 million spent by the local authority dealing with the storm was still outstanding, which councillors criticised.
When asked by this paper last week, a spokesperson for the Department of Local Government confirmed that the money has now been recouped.
“All local authority claims in respect of severe weather expenditure incurred during the year 2025 have now been processed,” the department said. “Roscommon County Council was recouped in the amount of €1,050,099.42.”
On Monday, during a meeting of the Roscommon Municipal District, councillors were informed that the money had been recouped. Councillors had previously written to the Taoiseach and minister for housing over the issue.
MD Co-ordinator Tom Mc Dermott informed the councillors that the monies had been reimbursed, saying the department had sought information from the council in late November.
Councillors welcomed the news, with MD Cathaoirleach Paschal Fitzmaurice saying he was delighted that the MD wrote to the Taoiseach.
Cllr Ruth Connolly Conboy also welcomed the news but questioned how future storm damage would be paid for, and she called for long term solutions.
The staff of the council were thanked for their hard work in responding to Storm Éowyn and other storms.
