County hurler to feel the heat for charity

A county hurler will be feeling the heat next Wednesday as he undertakes a sauna challenge for charity.

Twenty six year old Connell Kennelly, who is now living and working in Dublin, will be attempting a sauna challenge in the Sweaty Yeti in Lanesboro on Wednesday, November 19th.

In order to raise funds for ‘Plant the Planet Games Uganda’, the St Faithleach’s and St Dominic's man will be spending a total of two hours in the sauna, four blocks of 30 mins with a 10 min break in between to rehydrate.

Connell Kennelly will be undertaking the challenge this coming Wednesday.

Connell along with 50 other intercounty players, led by Alan Kerins of the Warriors for Humanity movement, will be heading to Uganda with the Plant the Planet charity very soon. Each participant is raising €10,000 to fund planting 10,500 trees, which will remove 312 tonnes of carbon from the atmosphere each year. Connell is well on his way to meeting the target, having already reached more than €7,500. Connell thanked everyone who has already donated, and there are sponsorship spots still available.

“Anyone donating will be helping to provide cash crops for the Ugandan people. These will provide them with food and a sustainable income, and have a massive net benefit for the planet,” he said. “We’ll be doing various activities such as planting the trees, building facilities, playing the first official GAA team in Africa, Uganda’s Simba Wolfhounds, and running alongside elite Kenyan runners led by the legendary Fr Colm O’Connell, who is known as the ‘Godfather of Kenyan Running’.” He said that Roscommon GAA stars Diarmuid and Ciaran Murtagh, Ultan Harney and Roisin Wynne are all past participants of the programme.

“I feel lucky that I get to go as well,” said Connell. Speaking about the challenge, he said he wanted to do something a bit different.

“It will be brutal,” he laughed, “but it should be a bit of fun. It’s for a great cause. I have my own sauna hat which keeps you cooler, so that should help. Some of my friends have said they’ll do parts of the challenge, so I won’t be alone during it.”
