Deadline for submissions on Lidl in Monksland is today

The development received widespread support at a recent public meeting.

The deadline for submissions on the planned Lidl store in Monksland is today, Tuesday, June 30th and a number have already been made to the council.

A public meeting took place earlier this month at the Monksland Community Centre on the issue, where the development received widespread support, including from public representatives.

Among the submissions already received, local Fianna Fáil councillor John Keogh said he supported the application.

“The Community of Monksland/Bealnamulla and the wider South Roscommon area are calling out for a budget type supermarket in the area,” he wrote.

“The provision of such a supermarket would encourage more competitiveness and would also contribute to climate action. With the population of the Monksland/Bealnamulla area projected to increase significantly over the next 14 years and based on current demands, there is a just reason for planning permission to be granted for such a budget type supermarket in the area.”

He said that the greenlight for the development would address climate action requirements “as many people who currently live in the area drive to the other budget type supermarkets in the Athlone region thereby causing unnecessary damage to the environment through air pollution”.

Permission is being sought for the  site of 1.2106ha on lands to the south of T junction on the R362 and immediately south of the Joe Duffy car showroom, L-7596-0, Monksland.

The Lidl plans include the development of a discount foodstore with a gross floor area of 2,358sqms. The plans also include a separate 145.8sqms café/restaurant with a sheltered outdoor seating area along with another retail unit of 145.4sqms.

The development also plans plaza areas between the discount foodstore and café/restaurant unit and fronting onto the road.
