Decision due today on planned Aldi store for Boyle
A decision is due today on plans for an Aldi store in Boyle.
Roscommon County Council is due to make a decision today, Thursday, on whether to approve planes for a new Aldi store in Boyle.
The supermarket plan is part of a mixed-use development which includes the demolition of derelict buildings and structures and the proposed refurbishment of five houses along Patrick Street.
Last month, Aldi provided further information requested by the council, which included an ecological impact assessment report to assess the potential impacts of the proposed store on bats and habitats/fauna of local importance.
The report prepared carried out by environmental consultants Altemar deemed that proposed mitigation measures would “satisfactorily address” this potential impact.
Altemar was of the opinion that the proposed supermarket would result in the “destruction” of an existing bat roost but based on the number of common species found using the site, “displacement from this site will not have any significant effect on local bat populations”.
Altemar asserted that detailed mitigation measures proposed in the report “satisfactorily addresses” the potential for significant effects on bats, badgers, bird nesting and breeding, and aquatic biodiversity given its proximity to the Boyle River.
