Local Fianna Fáil TD, Dr Martin Daly, has been named as his party’s spokesperson on health.
Dr Daly, who was elected for the first time to the Dáil in last year’s general election, announced today that he had been given the appointment.
“I aim to make an important contribution and drive health policy forward in Ireland,” he said on social media.
As well as being a GP, Dr Daly is a former President of the Irish Medical Organisation, and he has repeatedly stressed the need for improved access to health services for rural patients.
There was speculation earlier in the year that he might get a junior ministerial position in the coalition but this did not pan out, but today's announcement is a significant promotion for the first time TD.
