Three students from Elphin Community College won a major award at the Junk Kouture World Final in Monaco this evening, Thursday.

Fifth Year students Mary McNulty, Vanessa Kielty and Martha Nugent won the Microsoft STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics) award for their ‘STEMinist’ creation.

The Elphin secondary school students were among sixty finalists from around the globe showcasing their ingenious, eco-friendly couture creations at the prestigious international event venue, the Grimaldi Forum.

The inspiration behind their ‘STEMinist’ creation was to encourage more girls to get involved in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) subjects.

Their design was made from a range of material including rusted corrugated iron, a copper water cylinder, old electrical wiring, nuts and bolts, disused landscape netting, tool mats, plastic and a dismantled grandfather clock.

There were six nations competing with 10 creations on show from each country, including Ireland. The Roscommon students were joined on the trip by their Art teacher Susan Prendergast along with family members of the three girls.

Students from Moate Community School in County Westmeath were announced as overall winners.
