For generations, Cox’s Cross Carnival in North Roscommon and its famous All-Ireland bonfire attracted thousands of visitors from across Roscommon, Leitrim, and the surrounding counties.
From the 1940s to the 1970s, long before dance halls became widespread, Bonfire Night at Cox’s Cross near Kilmore was a major annual gathering, with attendances reaching up to 4,500 people in 1959. These nights were rich in music, dance, song and community spirit.
Bonfire Night and the Carnival at Cox’s Cross soon gained a reputation throughout the country, developing into a vibrant hub of activity and entertainment. People travelled from near and far to enjoy evenings filled with music, dancing, and singing, featuring some of Ireland’s top showbands and performers.
Over the years, many lasting friendships and love stories began at Cox’s Cross. At the heart of this remarkable event were Phyllis Glancy O’Dowd and her husband John, who lived at Cox’s Cross. Deeply committed to community life, they worked tirelessly alongside a dedicated local committee to ensure the continued success of the bonfire and carnival, creating memories that have endured for decades.
