Fiosrú opens investigation into Garda Colm Horkan’s gun holster

The late Detective Garda Colm Horkan.

Fiosrú, the Garda watchdog body, has opened an investigation into Detective Garda Colm Horkan’s gun holster following a request from Justice Minister Jim O’Callaghan.

Det Garda Horkan was killed in Castlerea in June 2020 when Stephen Silver took his official firearm from his holster and shot him.

Fiosrú received the request from Minister O'Callaghan to "conduct an independent investigation into matters concerning the safety and suitability of the firearm holster used by Detective Garda Horkan at the time of the incident in which he was murdered".

The request for a public interest investigation was made by the Justice Minister by way of letter to the Police Ombudsman, Emily Logan, on Monday, November 2nd.

The Garda watchdog said it has been in contact with Garda Horkan’s family.

Fiosrú said it will now commence its independent investigation and would make no further comment at this time.

The Garda's family has been campaigning for a public inquiry into the incident.
