The Minister for Rural and Community Development, Heather Humphreys TD, has today (Saturday, April 13th) announced funding for the upgrading of a number of walking and hiking trails across County Roscommon.
The projects being funded in County Roscommon are the Miners’ Way & Historical Trail, €6,614 to install a self-closing gate and repairs to the trail surface where prone to flooding; the Lung Lough Gara Way, €8,849 for the installation of drainage pipes to take away excess water, and resurfacing to raise up the section and improve accessibility and the Suck Valley, €9700 for the replacement of a damaged footbridge.
Meanwhile, the Leitrim Way Trail has been allocated €10,000 for the resurfacing and installation of drainage to repair the trail and installation of a bog bridge, two picnic benches and a stile. In Sligo the Miners Way & Historical Trail at the Bricklieves is to get €10,000 and €10,000 has been allocated to Keash Hill to step the remaining part of the trail with stone to enhance the surface.
Making the announcement Minister Humphreys said: “There is no better way of seeing our beautiful countryside than to use the many trails and walkways that are dotted around the country.
“These trails, many of which were created by volunteers and community groups, need to be cherished and maintained, so they can continue to be enjoyed by all.
“These projects will also see investment into the local economy as they are carried out by small contractors using materials from local suppliers.”
