A fundraising appeal has been established to help repair the iconic windmill in Elphin, which suffered significant damage during Storm Éowyn.

The 300-year-old landmark, the oldest operational windmill in Ireland, had its timber sails completely ripped off during the peak of the storm.

After being fully restored to its former glory, it was officially opened in 1996 by Hollywood star, Gabriel Byrne, whose mother Eileen hailed from Elphin.

A GoFundMe page has now been set up to raise money towards the renovation of the popular visitor attraction.

The hope is that the windmill will be reopened to the public as soon as possible.
