Castlerea St. Kevin’s GAA Club is inviting the public to a special event on Saturday, October 18th at 2 p.m. to officially commemorate ‘The Shed’ and honour the remarkable legacy of Dan O’Rourke, whose vision and dedication helped shape the sporting and cultural life of Tarmon, Castlerea, St. Kevin's and Roscommon GAA.

The commemoration will take place beside Tarmon School (Eircode: F45K298), where a plaque will be unveiled to mark the significance of this historic site.

Dan O’Rourke's vision and dedication helped shape the sporting and cultural life of Tarmon, Castlerea St. Kevin's and Roscommon GAA.

During the late 1930s and early 1940s, Dan O’Rourke made his land and facilities available to Roscommon footballers for collective training – something that was well ahead of its time. He had 'The Shed’ built beside Tarmon School to provide sleeping quarters for players travelling from across the county, while his family provided meals and hospitality. This unique arrangement created the foundation for what became known as the “Six Glorious Years” of Roscommon football, which saw the county win multiple Connacht titles and two All-Ireland senior championships in 1943 and 1944.

In later years, 'The Shed’ was transformed into a lively cultural space, hosting concerts, drama productions and dances, becoming a vibrant gathering place for the local community.

All are warmly invited to join Castlerea St. Kevin’s GAA Club, the O’Rourke family, and members of the wider community to celebrate this important chapter in local history.

Refreshments will be served afterwards in Tarmon National School.
