Plans to develop a hostel in Boyle have been withdrawn in the face of major objections.
A decision was due last Friday on the planned development at Abbey Terrace on the Sligo Road in the town.
However, the planning application was withdrawn by the developer, who initially lodged the plans on November 16th last.
More than 40 local objections were formally lodged with Roscommon County Council against the plans to change a local property into hostel accommodation.
A local group called ‘Boyle Concerned Locals’ also set up an online petition against the planned development.
Welcoming the news of the withdrawal in a social media post, the group thanked those who had signed the online petition and those who had submitted objections.
The formal objections to the development varied and included concerns over adequate car parking spaces in the immediate vicinity, and the proposed building’s location along a popular walking route, used by locals and schoolchildren.
The hostel project had plans for four dormitories with a maximum of 10 people in each dormitory.
