A West Roscommon bog was the target of illegal dumping only days after it was subject to a major clean-up by Roscommon County Council.

Fianna Fáil councillor Paschal Fitzmaurice said it was “so disappointing” to see building and domestic waste dumped at Corlis bog, a mere days after the council’s environment department organised a significant clean-up. The bog is located between Castlerea and Ballinagare.

Cllr Fitzmaurice raised the matter at a Roscommon Municipal District meeting, and said people disposing of their waste needed to take that responsibility more seriously.

Pointing to another recent council clean-up of Cloonalough Bog in Ballinlough, Fine Gael councillor Gareth Scahill recalled a motion at the last plenary meeting proposing that a letter be sent to the Environment Department calling for stronger measures to penalise offenders.

Apart from outstanding GDPR issues around erecting CCTV cameras, Cllr Marty McDermott queried the possibility of signs being erected to say that there was CCTV in operation. “It might be a deterrent. This dumping is completely disrespecting communities and I would love to see heftier fines,” he said.

The two bogs are known blackspots for illegal dumping, and both council clean-ups were funded through the anti-dumping initiative 2024.
