A major spill of kerosene on the grounds of King House in Boyle “following recent criminal incidents” has led to the closure of the historic building and the library until further notice.

Roscommon County Council has confirmed it has engaged the services of specialist environmental contractors to deal with this "significant spill". It has also referred the matter to the gardaí for investigation.

A council spokesperson said that to protect staff, visitors and collections, and to facilitate remediation works, all public events scheduled for King House and Boyle Library have been postponed and both locations remain closed until further notice.

The spokesperson said that gardaí are also reviewing available CCTV footage as part of their inquiries.

“Roscommon County Council will fully support and cooperate with this investigation at this time, and while garda inquiries are ongoing, Roscommon County Council will not be making any further public comment on the circumstances of the incidents.

“Updates on the reopening of King House and Boyle Library will be provided on the council’s website and social media channels. Library users can avail of services in any of our public library locations or through online library services. Details relating to library services are available at www.roscommoncoco.ie/libraries,” said the spokesperson.
