Littering around Castlerea ‘a sad situation’
Littering is a really frustrating problem for communities.
Litter around Castlerea Town was criticised at the recent Roscommon Municipal District meeting.
MD Cathaoirleach Cllr Paschal Fitzmaurice said that businesses and people had been contacting him about the amount of littering in the town.
“A number of years ago we had a dedicated person for cleaning up on a regular basis,” he said, but this was no longer the case.
He acknowledged that there was another member of staff who emptied the bins. “They do great work, but we did have a second person,” the Fianna Fáil councillor said.
“This has been raised by a lot of businesspeople. They are frustrated, they are paying their rates.”
The Fianna Fail councillor also highlighted the good work of a volunteer who collects litter on the outer areas of the town.
“He does amazing work,” Cllr Fitzmaurice said. “Because of the litter in the town, I asked him to go out and he collected 22 bags of rubbish over a number of days. That’s a sad situation.”
He asked MD co-ordinator Tom McDermott if a member of staff could be sourced for this role. Mr McDermott said that staffing levels were down currently but that the town’s 21 bins were emptied every day, including weekends.
