Local TD to meet with Cuan on development of domestic violence refuge in county

Sinn Féin TD for Roscommon/Galway, Claire Kerrane will visit Cuan offices today, Wednesday, to meet with them in relation to the development of a Domestic Violence Refuge in County Roscommon.

Cuan are the statutory agency tasked with increasing refuge spaces as part of a coordinated whole of Government response to domestic, sexual and gender based violence in Ireland.

Ahead of the meeting, Kerrane said: "I have sought a meeting with Cuan to discuss the development of a domestic violence refuge for County Roscommon in the hope that we can make progress on this really important service and support here.

"Roscommon is one of a number of Counties with no refuge for those fleeing domestic violence.

"I have raised the difficulty some elements of the criteria are having on the floor of the Dáil with the Minister for Justice and I am anxious now to take this issue to Cuan directly to see what more I can do to see progress. I will also be seeking an update on a eefuge for Ballinasloe as this has been previously muted.

"Having supported women out of domestic violence situations, I know the importance of having somewhere to go and that not having somewhere safe to go can be a barrier to leaving in the first place. This cannot continue.

"Of course, refuges are essential for those who need them but we also need to be looking at the survivor being able to remain in the home and the abuser having to leave. Those who suffer abuse in whatever form should not lose their home and so both must go hand in hand.

"If you are in a domestic violence situation, there is help and there is support right now today. Roscommon Safe Link, whom I have met, are a phone call away and if you need them, please reach out on 0719664200. I have seen women seek help and begin new lives where they are now happy, safe and content. It is not easy but you can do it and you will not be on your own," said the Deputy.

Work is progressing for the development of an eight-unit purpose-built refuge in County Roscommon with a site identified for the development.
