Major fundraiser to honour memory of late Rita Sharkey

The late Rita Sharkey (front left) was widely known for her active involvement in local life in the Croghan area.

A major community fundraiser is set to take place on Sunday in memory of the much-loved Rita (Margaret) Sharkey, whose sudden passing on January 28th, 2025, was deeply felt across Cavetown, Frenchpark and the wider Croghan area. Family, friends and neighbours have united to celebrate Rita’s life while raising funds for a lasting memorial at one of her most cherished places, Cavetown Lake.

At the heart of the fundraising effort is a family fun day and monster auction, which will take place on Sunday, May 24th, at the Four Provinces pub. Organisers are inviting the entire community to turn out for what promises to be a lively and inclusive event, reflecting the spirit of togetherness that Rita herself valued so highly.

Funds raised will go towards the creation of a permanent memorial at Cavetown Lake, a place that held great personal meaning for Rita and where she spent many happy moments in the company of friends and neighbours. The memorial aims to ensure that her presence and contribution to community life will be remembered for years to come. In addition, a donation will be made to Croí in Rita’s honour, a cause that reflects the compassion and care she showed throughout her life.

The fundraising initiative also supports Paula Sharkey’s “Dip a Day in May”, helping to raise awareness and backing for an important health cause as part of the overall effort. This dual focus on remembrance and charitable giving mirrors Rita’s own generosity and commitment to helping others.

Rita was widely known for her active involvement in local life. She gave freely of her time, whether organising events, supporting neighbours or quietly helping behind the scenes. Her warmth, kindness and sense of humour left a lasting impression, and she was especially known for her ability to bring people together with laughter and good company.

Organisers of the fundraiser are encouraging people to get involved in whatever way they can – by attending on the day, donating to the cause or contributing items for the monster auction.
