Major public protest planned in County Roscommon town over future use of local apartments

Activity has been observed outside the Castlerea apartment block in recent weeks.

A major public protest is being planned in Castlerea town on Sunday afternoon to voice concerns about the future use of an apartment complex in the town.

The peaceful demonstration organised by local people will commence from the Lidl Store at 1 p.m. on the Knock Road and will make its way through the town.

Growing concerns have been raised by local people and public representatives about the lack of clarity around the future use of part of an apartment complex in the town.

There has been local speculation that a section of the property will be used to accommodate International Protection Applicants who are seeking asylum in Ireland.

Despite ongoing efforts by Oireachtas members, local councillors and the local media, no information of any kind has been forthcoming to date from the International Protection Accommodation Services (IPAS).

It is understood that there are 13 apartments in the block, 10 of which have been completed and three are being finished.

One of the organisers of Sunday’s protest told the Roscommon Herald that  people were very worried about the lack of information along with concerns about increased pressures on local services.

Yesterday evening, a protest involving local people took place outside the apartment block.
