Bloomsday will be celebrated in North Roscommon tomorrow Sunday, June 14th.
At 4.30 p.m. at 12 Chapel Street, Boyle there will be music that is ‘bloom centred’, refreshments and the unveiling of a mural. The mural is an interpreted quote from James Joyce’s Ulysses. The festivities will be hosted by Cora Molloy a member of the Ulysses reading group based in Boyle.
Ulysses follows the life and thoughts of Leopold Bloom as he adventures across Dublin over 24 hours. The celebration is named after the main character of the novel.
The Ulysses reading group based in Boyle has been reading the novel since February last year. The group reads the book out loud in hour long meetings. The group used to meet in the library in Boyle but has since moved to members' houses. It is led by Kelly Bryan, who is a scholar from Oregon in the USA. Kelly’s influence with the group is undeniable as she explains the obscure references and funny words throughout the book.
The novel is often referred to as the most important novel of an Irish person of the 20th century.
The Boyle event on Sunday will feature a talk about Ulysses, with an unveiling of the mural which contains Joyce's trusted horse Rosinante. The mural was created by street artist Roma Stryzhalo, a young Ukrainian living in North Roscommon.
