A man who called gardaí “rapists and f*****g rats” has been convicted and fined €250 for public order offences.
Jordan Lennon (29), with an address at Battery Heights, Athlone, appeared before Judge Bernadette Owens at Athlone District Court, charged with using threatening, abusive and insulting behaviour, and failure to comply with the directions of gardaí.
The court heard how, on November 2nd, 2025, at 10.55 p.m., at Barrack Street, Athlone, gardaí engaged with a male who was verbally abusive outside the Garda Station.
He started calling gardaí “rapists and f*****g rats” and was directed to leave the area. He continued to be verbally abusive and refused to leave, the court heard.
When gardaí attempted to effect arrest, the accused man took off on foot and was chased. He was located on Connaught Street and arrested for public order offences. Judge Owens convicted and fined Mr Lennon €250 on the failure to comply charge, giving him six months to pay. The abusive behaviour charge was taken into consideration.
“This type of behaviour will not be tolerated,” she concluded.
