A 22-year old man was given a suspended sentence for theft at a recent sitting of Roscommon District Court.
James O’Reilly, 7 Amber Heights, Cuan Glas, Galway, appeared before Judge Vincent Deane where he elected to have the matters dealt with at district court level. He pleaded guilty to the offences.
Sergeant Conor McShane told the court that on October 28th, 2025, the accused entered Lidl Roscommon and took alcohol cans worth €24. He then went to Casey’s Londis where he took two bottles of wine worth €30. These were not recovered.
When gardaí arrived to speak to the accused, he initially absconded and then became quite aggressive.
“How do you make this man learn his lesson?” the judge asked.
His solicitor, Sean Mahon, said that his client could not remember anything from the incident as he was “totally intoxicated”.
The court heard the accused had €55 in compensation for the goods taken.
The judge handed down a prison sentence of three months for the theft from Lidl, suspending it for two years. The other offences were taken into consideration.
