Man hospitalised with 'serious injuries' following incident at boxing tournament in County Roscommon

A weekend boxing tournament in County Roscommon has been cancelled following an incident which broke out on day one of the event on Friday evening.
A man was seriously injured during an incident at a boxing event in County Roscommon on Friday night, Gardai have confirmed.
The man received medical treatment at the scene and was later transferred to hospital.
Day one of the quarter finals of the 2024 National Boy/Girl 4 Championships were underway at The Hub in Castlerea on Friday evening when an incident broke out between a number men at the back of the venue as two young people were about to enter the ring.
Video footage, which has emerged on social media, shows a number of men, some in balaclavas and with slash hooks, engaged in the incident as spectators and young people ran for cover.
Late on Friday night the Irish Athletic Boxing Association (IABA) issued a statement condemning the incident and cancelling the remainder of the tournament, which was to take place at the venue over the weekend.
Gardai confirmed to the Roscommon Herald that "Gardaí and emergency services attended the scene of an incident of alleged assault, which occurred at a leisure premises in Castlerea, County Roscommon, on the evening of Friday, March 1st.
"A male, aged in his 40’s, received medical treatment at the scene and was later conveyed to Galway University Hospital for treatment for serious injuries, believed to be non-life-threatening at this time. Investigations are ongoing. No further information is available at this time," said the Gardai.
