The European â Parliament has voted to refer the Mercosur Deal to it's top court, a move that could delay the deal by two years and potentially derail it.
In a close ballot, MEPs voted 334 to 324 in favour of asking the Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU) to determine whether the deal is compatible with the bloc's policy.
Speaking at a "No to Mercosur” protest in Strasbourg yesterday MEP Ciaran Mullooly stated that, "farmers across Europe are united in their opposition to this deal and must continue the fight to ensure that farmers’ voices are heard and listened to at Commission level."
He warned, that the so-called safety clause and the Commission’s “magic money” proposals, which he described as an attempt to mislead farmers into believing they are protected, simply will not work.
