Met Éireann explains county's late inclusion in orange wind warning

The Orange Wind Warning was extended to the county this afternoon.
Met Éireann has outlined the reasons for County Roscommon's late inclusion in the orange wind warning this afternoon.
Roscommon had been the only county in Connacht not placed under a Status Orange Wind Warning for Storm Amy until this afternoon.
High winds and flooding has been reported throughout the county today, and some have questioned why the warning was not extended to the county earlier.
When contacted by this paper, Met Éireann said it has continuously monitored and analysed a very active and dynamic depression associated with Storm Amy.
“We used the latest atmospheric model output alongside observations from all our weather stations, buoys and satellites as they become available,” a spokesperson said.
“As Storm Amy has tropical origins, there is a high degree of uncertainty and instability associated with it. While the observed storm track remained consistent with the forecast, the pressure drop was greater than forecast. As a result, the forecast was updated to reflect the new data.”
The orange warning will last until 10pm this evening, while the nationwide yellow wind warning will last until midnight.
During the orange warning, people are being warned about the possibility of fallen trees, power outages and very difficult travelling conditions.
