Monksland road project could cost up to €30m

Roscommon County Council recently advertised a tender for engineering services for the Monksland Strategic Road Project, the Bogganfin/Tuam Road Link Road. The proposed link road will be an approximately 2.5km long single carriageway urban relief road, with associated active travel features such as cycle tracks and footpaths.
The council is seeking the services for the delivery of stages 1 to 4 of the Monksland Strategic Road Project linking the R362 to the N61. The estimated value of the tender is €300 000, excluding VAT, and the deadline for submissions is August 4th.
The road, which is listed on the as planned non-national road improvement on the Roscommon County Development Plan 2022-2028, has been long sought, and could cost between €20 to 30 million.
The primary objectives of the plan is to reduce the volume of vehicular traffic in the centre of Monksland; reduce the mode share of car transport; increase cycling as a mode share; and increase bus transport.
The indicative route runs from the roundabout on the R362 Tuam Road, close to River Village and the Old Tuam Road, before joining the N61 at Bogganfin.
“The proposed route has been best selected to support and facilitate the integration of land use with transportation infrastructure in an area with huge potential for development and limited opportunities to connect to the existing road network. The link road shall allow for public transport and active travel facilities connecting the Monksland and Bogganfin areas,” the council’s tender document said.
“The acceptance of this proposal will bring many benefits to the area of Monksland such as housing and development supporting the economic needs of the area, and links to communities separated by lack of infrastructure.” It added that if the proposal was acceptable, it would assist in alleviating congestion in the Bogganfin and Monksland areas where the R362 and N61 roundabouts are heavily congested by at peak times.
