Monksland traffic delays raised at council meeting

Recent traffic issues in Monksland were raised at this morning's meeting of the Athlone Municipal District.

There are significant concerns locally about the introduction of a signalised junction at the R362/L-75603 junction in Monksland, as part of planning permission for a new housing development. In the past week, traffic delays of up to 40 minutes were reported by some road users.

Cllr John Keogh asked council officials when the traffic light works might be completed. He also asked when the related housing estate is likely to be completed and for information on how many of the estate’s units would be for social housing.

Athlone MD Co-ordinator, Susan Loughnane, said she could not answer the councillor’s query about the housing estate. On the new signalised junction, it is her understanding the resurfacing works are scheduled to take place this week, she said. The water and wastewater connections are now in place, and the traffic lights are awaiting electricity connection, she added.

MD Cathaoirleach Domnick Connolly said he had also received a number of emails about delayed traffic in the mornings relating to the stop/go system.

Ms Loughnane said that the traffic delays related to a specific issue on one morning and evening, which has now been addressed. A specific traffic management plan has been agreed with the contractors, and there has been no repeat of the issue that happened on that day, the meeting heard.
