Ballymore CEO and founder Sean Mulryan is set to be awarded the Freedom of Roscommon following unanimous agreement by councillors at their monthly plenary meeting in April.
Council Cathaoirleach Cllr Liam Callaghan said he was making the proposal in order to recognise the Oran native for his outstanding contribution to business in Ireland, and for bringing international recognition to County Roscommon.
The Cathaoirleach also spoke of how Mr Mulryan and the property development company he founded, Ballymore, were renowned nationally and internationally for their work.
Cllr Callaghan also outlined the businessman’s support to many organisations and groups along with his generosity to charity.
“He is a worthy recipient of the freedom of the county. It’s not a thing we do regularly, we give this a lot of thought but we believe Sean Mulryan fits all the criteria,” he said.
The proposal to bestow the honour on Mr Mulryan, who is also a long serving Roscommon GAA benefactor, was seconded by Fianna Fáil councillor Marty McDermott.
Roscommon GAA said it was a truly fitting honour for a wonderful sponsor and a long-time supporter of all things Roscommon GAA.
Mr Mulryan is now set to join a distinguished list of recipients of the Freedom of Roscommon, which includes World Champion boxers, Aoife and Lisa O’Rourke; former President of Ireland Mary McAleese and her husband, former Senator Martin McAleese; the late Roscommon football legend Dermot Earley; the late writer, artist and academic, Brian O’Doherty; actor Chris O’Dowd; singer Brendan Shine and businessman Jim Callery, the founder of the National Famine Museum at Strokestown Park.
