Members of the public are invited to attend a naming ceremony on Friday (tomorrow) for the Athlone greenway bridge, which will officially be known as Mary O’Rourke Bridge/Droichead Mháire Uí Ruairc.
The ceremony will take place at 11 a.m., and will be attended by Taoiseach Micheál Martin.
He will formally name the bridge in honour of his late Fianna Fáil colleague.
A public consultation on the proposed name was held last summer and attracted 14 submissions.
Following consideration of a report on those submissions, councillors agreed to proceed with the naming.
Mary O’Rourke, who died in October 2024, aged 87, was Athlone’s most prominent political figure for decades.
She served as a Cabinet minister in several governments from the 1980s up to the 2000s.
