Nine primary schools in Roscommon recognised for participation in science, technology, engineering and maths Nine primary schools across the county were recognised by Science Foundation Ireland (SFI) for their participation in hands-on, inquiry-based learning in science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM).
Minister for Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science, Patrick O'Donovan TD announced the nine winners Friday morning.
The schools were rewarded for having their students solve everyday problems through stem with practical activities such as investigating renewable energy, growing vegetables and enhancing their technology skills through coding.
The Awards are broken into three categories. The Silver Award is aimed at schools starting out on the STEM journey and involves a minimum of two classes. The Gold Award, which is for schools further along their STEM journey, involves at least half of the classes in the school. The Platinum Award is for schools that have already achieved the Gold Award and want to challenge themselves to further integrate STEM into the school culture. This year, in Roscommon, two schools received the Silver Award, five schools received the Gold Award, and two schools achieved the Platinum Award.
The schools that won the awards were as follows: Granlahan NS, Silver; Athleague NS, Gold; Scoil Mhuire Gan Smal, Silver; Clooneyquinn NS, Gold; Our Lady of Mount Carmel NS, Gold; Rahara NS, Gold; St Attracta’s NS, Platinum; Ballintleva NS, Platinum; St Cóman’s Wood Primary School, Gold.
