'Now it’s our turn to stand behind him' Roscommon community rallies behind local man
Much loved Taughmaconnell man, Val Keogh.
A County Roscommon community is undertaking a fundraising campaign in aid of the Irish Motor Neurone Disease Association.
On Saturday, September 26th, the community of Taughmaconnell is coming together to hold a 5km walk/run in aid of the charity.
“At the heart of this fundraiser is someone very special to our community — Val Keogh,” the campaign said.
“Val has spent his life quietly giving his time, energy and support to others. A lifelong sportsman and dedicated member of the community, his contribution has been immense.
“From his early teenage years playing with Skyvalley Rovers, to his involvement as a coach and referee, Val has always been willing to give his time to help others. His love of sport, his community spirit and his willingness to lend a hand have touched so many people over the years.
“Val has also always had a deep love for the outdoors and the environment, planting hundreds of trees and dedicating much of his time to causes close to his heart. He has travelled abroad on several occasions to help build orphanages in Russia, Belarus and Ethiopia.”
Late last year, Mr Keogh was diagnosed with Motor Neurone Disease. While the illness has already taken away his ability to play the sports he loves, “it has not changed the person he is or his desire to help others,” the campaign said.
“Val has volunteered to take part in a drug trial, knowing that while it may not change the outcome for him, it could provide vital answers and hope for others living with MND in the future. Now, the community that Val has given so much to wants to give something back.” The community is asking the public to help support Val and the Irish Motor Neurone Disease Association.
