The late Gerry O'Connor.

The death took place on June 24th at his home, Lisroyne Oaks, Strokestown, of Mr Gerard (Gerry) O'Connor.

A native of Doon, Strokestown, Gerry was the son of the late Mr Stephen O'Connor and of the late Mrs Molly O'Connor (nee Gordon). He was educated at local primary schools and Scoil Mhuire Secondary School. He was a member of the first football team fielded by Scoil Mhuire in 1968.

On leaving school, he entered the building trade and was a noted tradesman. He also farmed at Doon.

An avid supporter of Strokestown GAA Club all his life, Gerry was a member of club teams at all levels during his footballing career. He was a member of the junior championship winning team in 1971 and of the intermediate championship winning team in 1977. He also played county football at minor level.

He was a selector on the county U-21 team that won the All-Ireland title in 1976. He served as club chairperson and in many other roles in later years. His commitment to the club was phenomenal.

Gerry was a familiar figure at all club and county matches down the years. News of his unexpected passing was heard of with deep regret among his relatives, wonderful neighbours and a large circle of life-long friends. He was predeceased by his sister, Antoinette.

The Funeral Mass was concelebrated at the Church of the Immaculate Conception, Strokestown, by Fr. Eamonn O'Connor, P.P., Fr. Vincent Atueyi and Canon Ciaran Whitney (Strokestown).

A guard of honour of serving and former members and players of Strokestown GAA Club took place from the church to Strokestown cemetery where interment took place.

He is survived by Anne, his children, Laura Cassidy, Kathriona, Rory and Stephanie Bonnici; sons-in-law, Kevin, Aaron, and Barney; daughter-in-law, Laura; grandchildren, Lily, Charlotte, Fionn, Joe, Isla, Jack and Theo; sister, Marie Belton (UK); brothers, John (Buncrana) and Stephen (Letterkenny); nieces, nephews, extended family and other relatives to whom deepest sympathy is extended.
