The roof of Roscommon Town's historic courthouse was recently assessed by the Office of Public Works.
The historic building has been closed by the Courts Service since December 2022 for health and safety reasons, and the increasingly dilapidated state of the county town’s courthouse, a listed building, has been a source of concern.
When contacted, the Courts Service said that the OPW has been on site with a contractor at Roscommon Courthouse to assess what needs to be undertaken to the roof to maintain the building.
On the same day, a number of OPW architects viewed the building’s interior to view its current condition and give their assessment of what needs to be carried out.
In July of 2025, an internal Courts Service memo, released through the Freedom of Information Act, said that “significant funding is likely required to address structural issues” particularly with the courthouse’s roof.
