Kerry native Jesse Buckley, who made history by becoming the first Irish woman to win the best actress Oscar, has strong local connections.
The 36-year-old Irish actress took home the Academy award for her portrayal of William Shakespeare’s wife Agnes – historically known as Anne - in the film adaptation of Maggie O’Farrell’s novel Hamnet.
Jessie’s great grandfather was Dr. Jack Comer from Pollaneyster, Williamstown. He was born where the Organic Mill House Farm is now located.
Dr. Comer’s parents were Simon Comer and Mary Waldron. Their daughter and Jack's sister, Mrs Mary Patterson of Ballybane, Ballinlough, taught in Williamstown NS for many years.
Locals in Williamstown are no doubt celebrating her historic Oscar win which took place at the 98th Annual Academy Awards at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood.
Marking Mother’s Day, Jessie went on to dedicate her award to “the beautiful chaos of a mother’s heart”.
