Over €1 million in funding for four Roscommon outdoor projects
The project will see the removal of the steps from the Fairgreen entrance to the Demesne in Castlerea. These will be replaced with 21 metre long ramp leading from the street down to the walkway.
Four projects in County Roscommon are set to receive €1,097,991 in funding for outdoor recreation improvements following an announcement by the Department of Rural and Community Development and the Gaeltacht this afternoon.
Nearly half of the funding, €500,000 is being provided to Roscommon County Council to reconnect Castlerea town with its natural waterfront which involves the construction of a ramp to replace existing steps and upgrade the river path for accessibility to all users.
A further €200,000 is being granted to the local authority under the Outdoor Recreation Infrastructure Scheme for Cavetown Lake which will see the installation of a pontoon including the development of a seating area with improved shower facilities.
€200,000 has been granted for the restoration and enhancement of Mote Park Amenity area for trail works and a new car park, while Roscommon LEADER has been granted €197,991 for enhancements to the Suck Valley way to improve underfoot conditions and accessibility.
Leitrim County Council’s project, the Dromod Roosky Greyway which involves the construction, of a 1.95km long greyway along the L1601, linking the villages of Dromod and Roosky has received €500,000.
The news of half a million euro for Castlerea has been welcomed by Cllr Paschal Fitzmaurice who had been involved with the project from the outset. He said he was delighted to promote the project and to have had come up with the concept and to get the backing of Roscommon County Council and the Castlerea Town Trust.
He said the project would be a gamechanger for Castlerea in terms of accessibility and looks forward to it going for tender and works getting underway as soon as possible.
Senator Gareth Scahill also said he was delighted the four projects has received funding.
Nationally Minister for Rural and Community Development and the Gaeltacht, Dara Calleary TD, announced €16.5 million to deliver 63 projects through the Outdoor Recreation Infrastructure Scheme (ORIS).
