People in ‘limbo-land’ over housing

A local councillor said a huge number of people are not eligible for social housing due to the income thresholds.

A huge number of people in the county are in "limbo-land" regarding housing, a recent council meeting was told.

During the January meeting of the council, Cllr Paschal Fitzmaurice raised the issue of the local authority providing social and affordable housing.

“I do feel very strongly about it,” he said. “I see a huge number of people who are not eligible for social housing due to the income thresholds.”

Another barrier was that the Department of Housing has one policy on income and the Department of Social Protection has another.

“Which is a bit crazy,” he continued. “I am dealing every day with people who can’t get on the social housing list and can’t get enough money to buy a house. They’re in limbo-land.”
