Lidl Ireland has lodged a planning application with Roscommon County Council to develop a new discount store in Monksland.

The plans include the development of a discount foodstore with a gross floor area of 2,358sqms.

The plans also include a separate 145.8sqms café/restaurant with a sheltered outdoor seating area along with another retail unit of 145.4sqms.

The development includes plaza areas between the discount foodstore and café/restaurant unit and fronting onto the road.

The site will be serviced by a new vehicle access towards the south of the site; with land set aside to access lands to the east of the site.

The application further includes the provision of surface level car parking spaces (including electrical vehicle charging spaces and the prewiring of other spaces to accommodate future EV parking), a setdown area for taxis, cycle stands, trolley bay, hard and soft landscaping, ESB substation building, site lighting, external mechanical plant area, external bin compound area, roof mounted photo voltaic panels, advertising signage (including designated signage areas on units 1 and 2) including two discount foodstore operator “flagpole signs”, retaining walls and all associated site works.

The development also includes the provision of a footpath and cycle path along the west boundary of the site and all site engineering works, drainage, water supply and SUDS works and associated works.

Permission is being sought on a site of 1.2106ha on lands to the south of T junction on the R362 and immediately south of the Joe Duffy car showroom, L-7596-0, Monksland, Athlone, County Roscommon.

A decision on the application is expected by July 21st.
