Protest underway at County Roscommon apartment block
People gathered outside a Castlerea apartment block tonight.
A protest is currently underway in Castlerea outside an apartment block.
According to the group the protest is to voice the concerns of the people of Castlerea in relation to the planned use of a number of apartments in the block.
There has been local speculation that a section of the property will be used to accommodate International Protection Applicants who are seeking asylum in Ireland.
No official confirmation has been forthcoming on this issue from the International Protection Accommodation Services (IPAS) to Oireachtas members, local councillors or the local media.
It is understood that there are 13 apartments in the block 10 of which have been completed and three are being finished. According to the group at the apartments this evening seven of the apartments are ready to move into.
Posting on social media, a spokesperson for the group said that they were there simply to register their concerns and to try and put pressure on to get information as to what was happening.
The spokesperson did acknowledge the efforts of the local councillors to try and get information and thanked them for doing so.
