A public meeting over fears of flooding to lands due to bog rewetting planned by Bord na Móna is to take place tomorrow evening, Tuesday, in Ballyleague.

It’s understood that thirty farmers between Ballyleague and Strokestown are claiming that their lands will flood due to the planned rewetting of adjacent bogs by the semi-state company.

Independent Ireland MEP Ciaran Mullooly, who has written to the Bord na Móna CEO over the matter, explained that exterior drains around the perimeter of the bogs are full of silt, and farmers want them cleaned out now before they flood in winter.

Farmers are not opposed to the bog rewetting but want this work first completed on these Bord na Móna drains.

There are about two hundred hectares of lands and a hundred hectares of bog in question.

The public meeting tomorrow evening is primarily aimed at landowners around Mount Dillon and Erenagh.

The meeting takes place tomorrow evening at 6 p.m. in St Faithleach’s GAA clubhouse in Ballyleague.
