Recovery of woman’s body in Roscommon river “a terrible tragedy”

Her body was recovered from the waters yesterday.
A local councillor has described the recovery of a woman’s body from a river in the Demesne area of Castlerea on Wednesday as a “terrible tragedy”.
“It’s a very sad situation and the community is in total shock,” said local Fianna Fáil councillor Paschal Fitzmaurice.
“We are here as a community to support the family through this terrible time,” he said.
On Wednesday, Gardaí and emergency services were alerted shortly after 3.30 a.m. following reports that the woman, who was in her 70s, had entered the water.
Her body was later recovered and taken to the mortuary at University Hospital Galway.
The results of a post-mortem examination will determine the course of the Garda investigation.
The coroner and the office of the state pathologist were also notified.
Enquiries are ongoing.
