Recycling road surfacing could help Roscommon County Council to meet increased costs, a recent meeting was told.

A meeting of Athlone Municipal District heard that work on four roads in the district due to take place this year had to be postponed due to increased costs, but would go ahead on the other 61 roads.

During the March, Cllr John Keogh highlighted that the surface of the Taughmaconnell to Bealnamulla road was recycled 16 years ago.

“And it is still holding up. It was a great job,” he said, adding that recycling was half the cost of blacktop surfacing.

“Maybe we should be looking at recycling on roads where possible to try and get more done, rather than using blacktop?” he said.

Cllr Valerie Duffy asked if the council had enough staff and whether the local authority should do more work itself rather than bringing in contractors.

Among the projects to go ahead are the safety works at St John’s and St Brigid’s Junctions, costing €150,000 each. This was welcomed by all of the district’s councillors.

Cllr Tony Ward repeated his calls for a new N61 road, saying it was vital for the development of Athlone City.
