Renewed calls for safety measures in Cloonfad

Renewed calls for more safety measures in Cloonfad were made at a recent meeting of Roscommon Municipal District.

Renewed calls for more safety measures in Cloonfad were made at a recent meeting of Roscommon Municipal District.

Fianna Fail councillor Paschal Fitzmaurice said there was a need for pedestrian lights and speed reduction ramps given the number of accidents that had taken place in the village.

Cllr Fitzmaurice had previously called for these ramps to be rolled out for towns and villages across the county. He said the process of doing this needed to be started, and discussions with the Transport Infrastructure Ireland would be required where regional routes were involved.

He said that the village of Cloonfad deserved such safety measures as it had “suffered quite a lot with accidents”.

The Fianna Fail councillor said that people were being encouraged to walk and cycle to school, and ramped crossing points were needed.

Highlighting the number of parents and children getting to the local school every morning, Independent Ireland councillor Nigel Dineen described the speed of some traffic going through Cloonfad village as “crazy”.

Cllr Dineen said that a significant amount of money had been spent on road markings a number of years ago but “they haven’t worked”.

“This has been going on too long. Traffic lights are needed. Enough is enough,” he said.
